One Year Sober: Reclaiming My Purpose, One Day at a Time

One year ago, I walked into Redwood Recovery feeling completely defeated. I had just finished DUI classes, lost my job, and alienated the people I loved most. My life felt stuck in reverse. Consequently, I couldn’t picture a future—let alone one filled with purpose.

Today, 365 days later, I’m not just sober; I’m thriving. Thanks to the support of Redwood Recovery, MentorWorks, and the Foundation for Family Life, I’ve learned that recovery isn’t just about what you leave behind—it’s about what you gain.

The Power of Structure in My One Year Sober Recovery

In the early days, I needed structure more than anything. Specifically, Redwood Recovery provided more than just a place to stay; it offered personalized addiction treatment, peer accountability, and a daily rhythm that kept me grounded.

Because I was in a community in Riverton, Utah, surrounded by people who truly understood my struggles, this became the turning point. We weren’t just trying to stay clean—we were building a foundation for something better.

Growth Through Mentorship & Life Skills

A few months into my journey, I joined MentorWorks. Therefore, I was matched with a mentor who had been sober for years. He didn’t just offer advice; instead, he helped me rebuild my resume, encouraged me to take on new challenges, and pushed me to find my voice again.

Through consistent action—applying for jobs, volunteering, and enrolling in courses—I slowly regained the confidence I thought was lost for good.

Healing Relationships & Mental Health

Recovery isn’t just physical; it’s emotional. For instance, I worked closely with my therapist to address the anxiety and trauma that fueled my past choices. Simultaneously, through Family Coaching & Education, I began the hard work of rebuilding trust with my parents and siblings.

Today, I don’t just have a support system—I have my family back.

The Gift of Giving Back

One of the most unexpected rewards of recovery has been the opportunity to serve others. Indeed, through community outreach and sharing my story, I’ve found a deep sense of purpose. There is something profoundly healing about helping someone else navigate the path you just walked yourself.

Embracing Life After My One Year Sober Recovery

My life isn’t perfect—but it’s real, and it’s mine. I laugh more. I sleep better. In addition, I show up for work and for the people I care about. I am present, and for the first time in a long time, I am proud.

If you are just starting your DUI classes, considering treatment, or stepping into a sober living home for the first time: Please know that change is possible.

Redwood Recovery, MentorWorks, and the Foundation for Family Life believed in me when I couldn’t believe in myself. One year later, I finally believe in myself, too.
